What Is Pilates Exercise? And How It Works

Pilates is a method of smoothing, strengthening and toning a person’s body. Instead of just sitting in front of the television pedaling away on the exercise bike, this exercise teaches how to work the mind and body together. It’s believed that only when every aspect of the body including the mind is in harmony with each other during exercise that the maximum benefit of the work out is achieved. Originally made by a man named Joseph Pilates from Germany, due to his physical problems as a child, he became determined to make an exercise regime dedicated to strength building. In doing so he became convinced that our lifestyle led to poor health and posture among many. He developed a series of exercises that incorporated the mind as well to control the muscles. Dancers were among the first to adopt the Pilates theory, soon to be followed by athletes. Once people saw the benefits of this particular exercise, they started to incorporate it into their every day lives.
This style of exercise has been long used by dancers and athletes to tone and strengthen their bodies for optimal performance in their professions. Celebrities and models quickly followed when they realized the effects Pilates had on the body. There’s no need for expensive and bulky exercise tools. All one need is a yoga mat.
Doing pilates is really a lot like doing Pilates Yoga. Gaining strength by “bulking up”, usually achieved with lifting weights makes strong muscles but they are often small and bulky, which can lead to injury. Other conventional exercises makes an imbalance by working only certain muscles while others remain weak or get weaker. This makes the body much more prone to injury or makes constant joint or back pain. Pilates concentrates on stretching the muscles to make them longer, leaner and stronger. By doing so the body develops flexibility along with strength and has the capability of being able to withstand more of the demands that an athlete requires. Dancers utilize core strength. This is when the muscles in your stomach, chest and back is trained and developed to make a strong center. By having this strong core, yogis are much more flexible and less prone to injury, especially to the back.
Just like in Yoga Class, anemphasis is placed on making harmony between the mind and the body by utilizing proper breathing and proper alignment of the spine. In using the mind to concentrate on the flow of the body’s movements, one becomes very focused on the simple act of breathing, stretching and the flow. Being so focused during this exercise makes an awareness of exactly what is taking place within the body. As one practices Pilates, they gain more of an understanding about how their body is changing over time.
As more and more people are learning about Pilates, they’re beginning to know what dancers and athletes have always known.. Part of the theory behind Pilates is that it teaches us how to go safely and gently using more effective methods of movement.
Today, Pilates has gained worldwide popularity as an extremely beneficial exercise for all ages. It allows for smooth, gentle movements encompassing the whole body.

Since then, my brother tried it out in HS and was the only guy in his gym class to do so. Now, but, I’ve seen more men trying Pilates.
