A hemorrhoid is basically an enlarged or twisted vein in the wall of the lower rectum and/or the anus. There are several causes for hemorrhoids, the most well loved of these are the extra pressure placed on the anorectal area by steady constipation or by being pregnant; aging, obesity and the frequent use of enemas or suppositories can also be probable factors. Hemorrhoids (or ‘piles’ as they are often called) may be so insignificant that they will hardly be noticeable or they may be so severe that the pain is excruciating and, in the more intense cases, you may notice bleeding.
