We’ve all heard that calcium is vital for strong bones and healthy teeth. Calcium is the most abundant mineral found in our bodies and serves a variety of important functions, particularly in the skeletal-muscular system but is vital in other bodily areas as well. Our everyday diet generally provides us with our calcium needs but in some instances it may not, depending partially on which foodstuffs are readily available to us.

One way to do this is through the foods you eat and the milk you drink. If your diet lacks calcium, supplements are a good way to increase your daily intake, but you should know more about the supplements before taking them. The lack of calcium in your body can cause many adverse effects.

The amount your body needs daily varies on age and whether or not you are pregnant. On average, 19-50 year olds should be getting 1000 milligrams of calcium a day, whether that be through diet or supplementation is up to you.

While most of us can safely take calcium supplements and overdosing is generally not a problem you should check with your doctor if you are on prescription medicines. Some medicines to not mix well with calcium. Intake of excess calcium can make some health conditions, such as kidney stones, worse. The calcium in supplements is often bound with other elements or compounds such as carbons (calcium carbonate), lactates or citrates.

Check the label for a USP symbol, which means the supplements do not contain mercury, lead and other metals. Calcium supplements come in different sizes so be able to sure to check the label for the size of the serving. Calcium is so important for many bodily functions so supplements are something to consider if you think your diet may be lacking the reccomended daily amount. Always check with your doctor first if you’re unsure about taking them or if you’re unsure about how and when to take calcium supplements.
