Over 13 million North Americans suffer from rosacea. It is most commonly seen in those people who have fair skin and is sometimes referred to as the “Curse of the Celts” or a “Peaches and Cream” complexion.
Onset usually occurs between 20-40 years of age.
Rosacea is a long lasting, non-scarring skin condition of the face that is often misdiagnosed as adult acne. It varies in severity and does not always worsen with time. Typically, you will experience inappropriate flushing that is not usually associated with sweating and/or persistent facial redness. It is common to have broken blood vessels, telangiectasias, on your cheeks. You may also experience bouts of inflammation that cause red papules (small bumps) or pustules. However, comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) are not part of rosacea.
A face lift is famous medical surgery that intends to bring youthful appearance back into a person’s face. A facelift stretches the skin and removes excess skin, and it repositions saggy facial tissues. This procedure has been done for more than a hundred years, and is one of the most famous beauty surgical procedures done today.
The exact cause of acne in most cases is not known. Many doctors believe that acne results from several different factors. One of such factors, and that is very important, is the rise in one’s hormone levels. During the pubescent years, the male sex hormones called androgens increase in boys and girls. This can cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and produce more sebum, which results in acne.
A cause of acne is heredity or genetics as researchers believe that there is a tendency to develop acne as it can be inherited from your parents. In fact studies have shown that many school-age boys who are suffering from acne have a family history of the disorder.
All the recent research is continuing to show a strong link between Vitamin D and positive health issues ranging from new asthma treatments and lung health to the prevention of colon and breast cancer. For instance, research is showing that a daily intake of 1,000 units of Vitamin D greatly reduces the odds of getting colon cancer by about half, and the chances of breast and ovarian cancer by about one third.
Today, most people want their food fast, and want their medicines to work instantly. Perhaps this can be summarized by the phrase- everyone wants to be gratified in an instant. Although there are advantages to getting what you desire in a blinking of an eye, there are undesirable consequences that you will have to live with as well. One example of this is stretch mark surgery. Although this kind of treatment will take away your stretch marks in just a few hours but what remains unsaid are the risks involved in a serious procedure like this.
Natural skincare has grown to become a multi-million dollar industry with an endless range of brands to choose from. So what should you look for in a brand?
Many natural skincare products available in the market contain only small amounts of natural extracts added to a chemical or synthetic base. Unfortunately, when these extracts are suspended in a chemical synthetic base, any real enzyme activity the plant extract might have had is totally lost.
The problem is compounded, because we are also exposing ourselves to potentially harmful ingredients in the form of synthetic bases.
Other ranges may produce a high quality product with high levels of natural ingredients, but still contain some ingredients that you may want to avoid. ‘Ethically Natural’ skincare brands should contain no artificial chemicals or unnatural preservatives, blending science and nature together, to create a natural, highly potent, botanical product.
According to New Zealand skincare brand Living Natures head of Research and Development, Dr Greg Clark, skin responds best to natural skincare, because our bodies have evolved with nature.
“The human body has developed over hundreds of thousands of years in tune with nature and the environment - plants in particular have been a major source of nutrients and vitamins. Our bodies have evolved systems to extract these nutrients from plant material and utilise them to nourish and grow our bodies and maintain our health and wellbeing.”
Consumers wanting to be sure they are getting a truly natural skincare, should look for the mark of bodies such as BDIH who only certify ‘safe’ and ‘green’ products and do not allow any of the unsafe ‘nasties’ commonly found in many products.

The skin on our hands and face can be subjected to harsh conditions at any time of the year and it can start to show signs of neglect if we are not careful to protect and nourish it. The surface of the skin can appear dry if the glands just beneath the surface do not produce enough of the natural lubricant, sebum, which protects the skin from extremes of cold and heat, wind and other environmental factors.
Some skin preparations concentrate on adding lubricating oils externally, but the aromatherapy approach is to combine such oils (almond, apricot, avocado, etc.) with essential oils that gently stimulate the sebaceous glands to function more effectively. Regular massage will increase the circulation in the tiny blood-vessels (capillaries) that feed the growing layer of the skin, which in turn will improve the whole health of the skin.
Dry skin is often very sensitive, so it is important to use gentle ingredients that will not aggravate the already damaged dry surface cells. Gentle flower oils such as Chamomile, Jasmine, Calendula and best of all Rose are the most suitable to settle dry rough or prickly skin. Oils such as Palmarosa will stimulate cell regeneration as well as balancing sebum.
